Not Quite Rabbit Ears

Today's deer wants a pair of rabbit ears. Or rather it *is* a pair of rabbit ears on a tiny modified dollhouse tv.

Seriously. Explain the change to digital tv to a person who is older than you. You will have old school broadcasting methods on the mind for *days*. (You will also remember how you dodged a bullet by changing your major from print journalism aaaaaall those years ago.)

Tea Leaves

OMG! I see deer in my future!

SpoooOOOOOOoooky! (heh heh!)

Purple H(e)art Barf

Since it's still a bit wintery in Seattle and I've been on a barf kick lately, I thought I'd combine the two elements by updating my ratty green hoodie.

Here's a detail.

(I swear that the green hoodie is getting turned into cleaning rags after this cold spell is over. It's not much more than lint at this point anyway. hee hee!)

Tiny Fawn Banner

What do you know! It's a tiny fawn banner!

How tiny? It's dime sized!

Watch a sitka deer video. It is Wednesday, after all.

Deerhunter--UO Wall Mural

Xela G. spotted this Urban Outfitters wall mural of white tailed deer.

Have you seen any deer lately? Made any of them yourself? Email me at rakkadeer [at] gmail [dot] com and I might post your image here!

Electrical Tape Stag Head

Somehow in my many moves I have accumulated rolls and rolls of electrical tape. I have no idea where they came from. But, you know what they say, when life gives you electrical tape, make a stag head out of it!

Yes, it does look vaguely S&Mish. But for the sake of my youngish cousin who occasionally reads this blog, let's not go there, shall we?

DVDeer

Remember yesterday when I mentioned that I'd read about how glo stick juice was supposed to be able to etch into dvds and cds? (Well, ok, I didn't give you the specifics but whatever.)

It didn't really work. I don't know if I used the wrong brand of glo stick or dvd or whatever but I ended up with a sticky mess.

But then I thought, why not try a scouring pad? Surely that would work, right? Eeeeh, kinda'. I mean, it's there but it's ghosty. (And extra supersaturated for your viewing pleaseure.)

Not to be defeated (I'm stubborn sometimes), I utilized a trick that I learned in my college printmaking class. In other words, if you have softish plastic and a needle, you can absolutely etch into the surface of said plastic. End result:

It works! But I wouldn't dare put this through a press. Shards ahoy! As such, I doubt I'll be pulling any prints off of it in the near future.

(For those of you who must know, the dvds in question were of Ubuntu 8.10 and a (backup) copy of "Kiki's Delivery Service". Both were botched and unusable.)

Staggering Effect or What Was Almost Doe in the Dark

I enjoy working with glo stick juice. (I've done it before.) So when I found an unused glo stick hiding in a drawer (What? I'm sure you have a spare one somewhere too...), I thought I'd test its etching capabilities.

I'll update about how the etching went later in the week but just check out this glowing stag!

I also attempted a "doe in the dark" image as well but I wasn't happy about how it turned out. Here's a photo of it in the works. (Thanks to Leff for being all paparazzo.)

Deer Collage (Be Your Own Pet)

It's a collage for your Saturday! No, I don't know what's up with the flying deer motif from the past two days.

Yeah, I liked Be Your Own Pet. I'm kinda' sad they're gone.

ANYway, today promises to be sunny in the PNW and, if I'm not mistaken, Leff has rented us a Zipcar for the day. Later, gators!

Thaumatrope Deer

I thought I'd go in the old fashioned animation direction today by making a thaumatrope.

I even included a crappy video! Hooray!

Headfawns

Fawn made from headphones.

Continuing in a deer/tech vein, have you ever seen this PS2 commercial? I hadn't until yesterday.

Triple Horny

Here's a quick polymer clay stag head with three horns for your Wednesday. (Why are Wednesdays always so busy?)

Do I need to mention how much I adore cryptozoology? I didn't think so. Have a unicorn deer video for the road!

Cream Cheese and Olive Stagwich

Stag profile as cream cheese and olives on rye. It's the tastiest deer yet!

In no way related to rye bread or sandwiches, here's a cool albino fawn video that I stumbled across on the youtubes the other day.

Deerhunter!

Hey, Deer Fans! I've started a new feature today called, just like the title says, "Deerhunter"!

No, it's not going to be a place for you to show me your trophy bucks (I'm a lover, not a hunter). It will be where I 'll post what deer images, sculptures, movies, etc that readers have sent to me!

Let's kick things off with the new L.L. Bean catalog that Chris G. brought me on Sunday!

Chris jokingly stated that L.L. Bean had "stolen the deer idea". At least I think that's what he said. I hadn't had coffee yet....

Do you have any deer you'd like to share? Email me at rakkadeer [at] gmail [dot] com and I may post your image sometime soon!

One Angry Doe

I prefer to see the "Screw You" as breath. If, however, you choose to view it as a mustache of some sort, you might be interested in Beard and Stache Fest '09. All proceeds and facial hair go to a good cause!

*@!?ing Deer

Yes indeedy corn cobs, I do enjoy shouting a good string of expletives! But, given that my young cousin occasionally checks out this blog, I thought I'd keep things on the PG rated side.

Which is why this is a *@!?ing deer and not a fu...hey! It's a detail!

YoDeer Outttake: Laser Deer

Sometimes at the apartment we call Casa Rakkaleff we amuse ourselves by making our own laser shows. (It's best that you don't ask.)

I thought it would be fun to attempt a Year of Deer version. Buuut something didn't quite work. I mean, it *almost* did.

But it was mainly goofy

and/or squiggly.

Also a bit tiring.

Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Two Harts

Aw, look! It's two harts for your Valentine's Day!

(ed note: We don't celebrate VDay at Casa Rakkaleff. One of us has worked the Valentine's shift at a florist and, as a consequence, hates the "holiday" and roses equally.)

Aw, look! Here they are all backlit!

Aw, look! It's a link to Stacie Q singing "Two of Hearts" on "The Facts of Life". (Wow, the '80s were painful. (I can't believe I still get that song stuck in my head from time to time.))

Sharpie Stag

Today's deer is another quick one that's inspired by my great desire to see the Sharpie Show.

On a somewhat related note, I also need to get to SAM to catch the Edward Hopper exhibit before it's gone.

Invisible Stags

Below are two stag paintings.

I know, you're thinking "big deal", right? That's because you don't know that they were made with (cue spooky voice) invisible ink. Here's video of the second stag appearing like magic.

video

Want to make your own invisible ink? Mix equal parts sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) with water and use it to write or draw on a plain sheet of typing paper. After letting it dry completely, brush over it with grape juice and your image or message will magically appear.

Paper Clip Fawn

Sorry for this one being so late in the day but my rl job got in the way.

Fawn made from 13 paper clips.

Forget Me- Not Update

Before I get around to posting today's deer, this is a quick post to let you know that all three of my pieces for the "Forget Me-Not" show at Gallery Hanahou are now for sale here. (Sorry, you'll have to scroll a bit. I'm in row 10, the last three entries.)

So if you'd like to own any of these three pieces

please click through.

Edit: The sale page has been removed but these pieces will be traveling to Tokyo for another show. I'll post another sale link when it become available.

Shavings Stag

To go with yesterday's "Graphite Fawn", here's a stag made from pencil shavings.

And in deer news, an injured deer managed to stumble to a vet clinic where it received stitches before being set free. (link)

Graphite Fawn

Fawn drawn in graphite. Based on this photo. (Thanks to xtoq for using a Creative Commons license!)

An aside: Have any of you out there caught the cold that starts with a scratchy throat? Anyone know how long this thing lasts?

Shadoe

A shadow of a paper doe.

Since I'm still battling this stupid cold that refuses to go away, why not check out this BBC clip about mushrooms and reindeer.

Bird Barf Stencil

Here's a quick little piece for all of you stencil loving s&f fans.

I might eventually make this one into a silkscreen when I have more time.

Bookish Stag

Stag carved from a discarded library book.

I wish I'd had a copy of The Yearling to carve into but such is life.

Foil Fawn

A tiny fawn made of aluminum foil. Perhaps he should be called Reynold.

Deerstache

A quick mixed media drawing for your Wednesday.

If you'd like to see more in the 'stache vein, check out Casa Rakkaleff's Mustache Guestbook. Minutes of entertainment! (No deer involved though. Sorry.)

Bleach Deer

Bleach painting of a stag on tshirt fabric.

I don't have anything else to add so here's a link to a "video" for "Do the Bambi". Hey, it's deer related.

I Heart Reading!

It's true. I read entirely too much for my own good. But that can be good for you if 1)you'd like a copy of this sticker and 2) you also use the Seattle Public Library!

I'm placing an "I Heart Reading!" sticker inside of each book that I've checked out from SPL and completed during the running time of this project. Good hunting and happy reading!

p.s.--If you've found a sticker, would you please tell me in comments which book it came from and on roughly what date you found it? Thanks so much!

You're So Hot You're Making Me Sexist

Hey there and welcome to day one of the new project! (I hope that February didn't sneak up on you the way that it snuck up on me!)

I thought I'd kick off a Year of Deer with one of the pieces that I have in the "Forget Me-Not" show at Gallery Hanahou!

"You're so hot you're making me sexist" is a misquote from one of my favorite "Flight of the Conchords" song.

If you're in NYC on Feb 6th from 6-8 pm (est), please drop by the gallery! There are some *really* talented ladies in the show! More info here.

If you're interested in owing this nutty little embroidery (or either of my other two pieces), it'll be for sale online through Gallery Hanahou starting on the 11th. I'll post a link as soon as it's available.
